Terms Used for Condition of Models
The following is a nine-point universal grading system to describe the condition of Models, as used by the Model Price Guide.
1) Mint Boxed (MB or M/B)
As new in original factory
packaging with no undue paint flaws or blemishes. The model must be complete
and as originally supplied by the manufacturer.
2) Almost Mint and Boxed (AMB)
As new in original packaging,
but with either very small factory flaws, box rub marks or a few tiny chips.
3) Mint Unboxed (M)
As (1), but without the original factory packaging.
4) Very slightly chipped and Boxed (VSCB)
Slight chipping to the extreme
edges and very little play wear. The majority of models appear in collections
in this condition. Still very presentable with at least 80% of the original
packaging.
5) Very slightly chipped (VSC)
As above, but coming without the original packaging.
6) Slightly chipped (SC)
Showing greater signs of paint wear and heavier chipping on high points. Still presentable, with more paint on the model than chipped off.
7) Chipped (C)
Heavily chipped and with just enough paint on to make it difficult to decide whether to repaint! Not presentable and does not display well. This could be the minimum acceptable condition, otherwise restoration being required.
8) Poor (P)
More paint off the model than on, and definately in need of restoration. Original basic casting still intact with no structural damage.
9) Repaint or Resprayed (RP or RS)
Depending very much on the quality of the repaint, the value can be higher than a model in poor condition. Most collectors prefer models to be in original condition, without any touching-up of chips. In some cases an excellent restoration of an otherwise highly valued model, would be a suitable alternative, if the collector cannot afford to pay the high price of an original model in pristine condition.
