The only foreign winners of the key categories during the
taxing five-hour event at the Kodak Theatre were rock bands
U2 and the Rolling Stones, and Mexican-born guitarist Carlos
Santana, who has lived near San Francisco for decades.
The awards are based solely on record sales certified by the
International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, a London-based
trade group that represents the major record labels.
Santana picked up the legend award, and implored the crowd
to "heal the planet."
