This
is my own collection of high quality early live and studio recording
of Tangerine Dream.
Track Details:
Recorded
as "The Tangerine Dream Band", for a German movie in
1969
- possibly
from a TV broadcast?
1. "Underground" end titles - 1969 (2.33)
From
a German FM broadcast of a 'live' (in studio?) 1970 performance
2. Ultima
Thule improvisation - 1970
(7.59)
Ultima
Thule single
This is an "official" release that is offered with the Japanese
mini-LP pressing of Alpha Centauri, and to my knowledge, nowhere
else. Side 'a' was previously found on the re-issue of Alpha Centauri
as a bonus track, but here both sides of the single are pressed
onto a 3" CD as part of the mini-LP CD.
3.
Ultima Thule Teil 1 - 1971 (3.24)
4.
Ultima Thule Teil
2 - 1971 (4.09)
The
German 3 LP set Ossiach Live was the first record featuring
various artists, that included a track by Tangerine Dream: Oszillator
Planet Concert. This very first live recording of Tangerine
Dream was never released on a regular TD record. This extremely
rare sampler track is in excellent quality re-mastered from a
cassette recording of mine recently discovered. The Tangerine
Dream line-up in the tracklist features Peter Baumann with his
full name: Hans Peter Baumann.
5. Oszillator
Planet Concert (From Ossiach Live 1971 3LP) (8.04)
From an unreleased soundtrack from same-titled
German movie broadcast on TV 25th April 1972
6. Geradeaus bis zum Morgen - 1972 (3.45)
Top
Gear Session 29 October 1974:
This
was their first British Radio Session for the Top Gear Radio show
presented by John Peel. The three pieces here are also known as
"Oedipus Tyrannus", and the quality here is absolutely
awesome. When playing track two, the incredible deep sounds sent
shivers running throughout the whole of my body. I had recorded
this myself 30 years ago, but having lost my original recordings
have managed to obtain this from a trader in Japan. I have since
remastered the sound, reducing the slight hiss leaving an incredibly
clear recording.
7.
The Overture (5.58)
8. Zeus (11.00)
9. Boroque
(6.13)
Further Reading:
For
the Chichester Festival Theatre TD performed the accompanying
music score for "Oedipus Tyrannus" with Keith Mitchell as Producer.
The New Musical Express reported however that "the combination
of classical tragedy and timeless Krautrockers did not work".
A three-week tour followed in Great Britain in the autumn of 1974,
on which their music was visually supported for the first time
by a so-called 'Video Synthesizer'. The press called their concerts
'fascinating experiences' and the pop poll of the Melody Maker
ranked them among "the most promising bands in the world". The
distinguishing feature of their concerts at the time was that
they mainly consisted of improvisations. They had set themselves
the standard to never play the same piece twice.
The Overture that Tangerine Dream produced for the 1974 Chichester
Festival production of Sophocles' great tragedy, Oedipus Tyrannus,
is similarly suggestive of some of the more experimental Pink
Floyd works, but it also carries some quite distinctive TD hallmarks.
It is wonderful to have this great brooding masterpiece finally
available to listen to!
