I arrived at the Grande Piazza just as Roger Waters was
coming to the end of his soundcheck, hearing the opening
chords to In The Flesh, it was a wonderful experience. It's
a shame I hadn't arrived in time to record this soundcheck.
I had arrived in good time so as to eat in one of the restaurants
around the Grande Piazza, and after finishing my meal and
having a drink, just before 7pm the Piazza was cleared so
that people could then come back in after showing their
tickets. The Security came into the restaurants, and anyone
who had a ticket could give up their stub and stay, otherwise
they were asked to leave. Just after 7pm I saw people running
past to get to the front of the stage. I quickly got a drink
of water as it was very close and muggy, and made my way
to the front of the stage. I didn't hurry because I didn't
really want to be too close. I settled down about 30 yards
from the front of the stage and dead in the center. It proved
an excellent position to get a good view of all of the members
of the band and a perfect position to record from.
What a wonderful show it was, with some really fine performances
from all the band members. Andy Fairweather Low came to
the front to provide lead guitar for Leaving Beirut, which
had been done earlier by Snowy White (evident on the Live
in Rio DVD). The audience were pretty well behaved and apart
from a few people near me occasionally chatting it made
a great atmosphere.
I managed to record the complete show including all of the
applause for the encores so as not to miss anything. I used
a Sony ECM719 microphone which is perfect for my Sony MZR55
MiniDisc recorder, clipped to the back of a sports cap worn
with the peak facing backwards. This ensured that the microphones
were at their highest position possible in order to get
a crisp clear sound. The end result is an absolutely stunning
recording, it surprised me that I could get such a superb
recording from the audience. Check out the samples below
for yourself to see how good they are. They have been kept
fairly short to give you a taster and apart from that I
do have limited space on the web.
Apart from a suitable fade-in and fade-out for each disc
no other editing was required. I challenge anyone who can
match or exceed this quality for an audience recording.

FEEDBACK
ABOUT THIS RECORDING OF MINE:
After hearing the samples on the website:
Yeah sounds very good! ..... still I'm
glad it was of use - the man in the Sony shop told me "you'll
never have to buy a mic' again" I think he was right for now...
good night Nick (UK) - referring to the mic used for locarno.
Just had a listen to some of your audio samples - WOW amazing
quality - great bass & clarity. Dave C.
It is an incredible recording, as it
seems!! - Sara (Italy)
Ran it side by side with Verona loud
over speakers & sub-woofer. Yours is more defined and a clearer
sound, Verona is over bassy and slightly dull sound. Yours
could almost be a radio broadcast. A great recording - Dave
C. (UK)
Your recording is amazing, can't wait
to listen the whole roio!!! - Gergely (Hungary)
Tops in recording quality there. From
the pieces I heard, I don't imagine getting a better quality
recording. Nice full range, great stereo balance (out of a
quad speaker arrangement at the show, I imagine), low ambient
noise, with just enough crowd background to put you there
in the audience but not be distracted. Those mics, your position,
and recording techniques really did this show justice. Strong
contender for the best sounding show of the tour! - John M
Koons (USA)
I would really love to hear more of
your "Moon and Stars Festival", Locarno, Switzerland. I really
enjoyed reading about your experience there. The samples sound
fantastic. - Adrian (UK)
After hearing the full show on 2CDs:
It's on now - terrific sound over the
5.1 system - Dave
Your
cdrs are excellent - cheerz! 9+ -10 I'd give it!!!! well done!
Nick (UK)
Sounds AMAZING! - Sara (Italy)
What can I say about your recording
of the RW Locarno 16/7/06 but absolutely amazing! I think
its one of the best Floyd related audience recordings I've
ever heard. In fact probably the best I can't think of anything
that surpasses it that's for sure. You must have been pretty
pleased with the results upon first playing it back. - Adrian
(UK)
I'm currently listening to disc 2 Dsotm performance. Everything
is captured in perfect harmony its just an absolute pleasure
to listen to. It captures the live feeling of actually being
there so closely when I close my eyes I think I'm actually
at a live concert. In a word STUNNING! - Adrian (UK)
The sound from the locarno show is amazing!
what a awesome quality! - Pascal (Netherlands)
Was
given a listen to Roger Waters from 16.07.06 that you recorded.
To describe you as a genius would be an insult!!! The clarity
and quality of the recording is beyond brilliant!!! I am absolutely
amazed at how you do this. DSOTM is just great and the live
atmosphere and balance in the music is just enough to balance
that 'in the crowd' feel a treat.
