"Listen To This Eddie"
- one of the most famous bootleg titles of all time was
supposedly prompted by Eddie Van Halen's uncomplimentary
comments about Jimmy Page's guitar playing. Los Angeles
was the favourite playground for the band and, on what was
to prove a traumatic tour, provided six nights of shows
which were easily the best of their 1977 North American
visit. Three nights (21/23/25th) were certainly taped by
the legendary Mike Millard - it captures the band in peak
form right from the amazing drumming in the opening tracks,
through the newly introduced material from "Presence".
The band run through their full repertoire, from blues,
hard rock and even re-introduce the acoustic section to
their US audience, something which they were happy to do
in the UK but had previously abandoned in the States due
to audiences literally being in no fit condition to listen
(due to booze, downers and firecrackers).
John Paul Jones proved even more versatile than ever - the
triple-neck guitar/mandolin/12 string combination was introduced
and he even supplied backing vocals for "The Battle of Evermore".
This concert featured an outstanding performance of "No
Quarter" at it's centre and the whole concert has become
essential listening for any Led Zeppelin afficionado.
