Led Zeppelin
"BBC In Concert - original pre-mix Master"
Paris Theatre, London, UK

25th March 1971

The BBC Zep is always listed as 1 April; this may have been the transmission date as there is generally a delay 'twixt recording and transmission. This is the pre-mix master, direct from the original reel to reel (!), before it was mixed down to mono for broadcast. This show has actually been officially released in stereo, as part of the double CD "BBC Sessions" which features all but two of the songs presented here. This version however includes all the chat in between songs, even the occasional sip of tea, most of which was cut from the broadcast and the subsequent release of this BBC performance. This isn't like a usual Led Zep show, it's more like them rehearsing and being very relaxed, and taking their time in between songs.

Only an hour was transmitted and it has never been transmitted in it's entirety, which makes this a particularly wonderful piece. The acoustic material here is particularly interesting - there's a lovely warmth about the recording and it's especially evident in the acoustic section, where the performances allow the songs to speak for themselves, as it were. Even the version of "Stairway" is relaxed and has a natural beauty to it that other live performances miss.
