David Gilmour
"PISANO FOR PRESIDENT" - LDB Master Series #42
Piazza Santa Croce,
Firenze, Italy
2nd August 2006

This is the first of the three shows that David Gilmour will be playing over here. The background was the nice church of Santa Croce in Firenze with a great atmosphere: italians but also lots of tourists who did not want to miss this unique opportunity. All windows of the flats around the square were open with people watching the show (did they pay the ticket?).

he show started on time at 9 PM, with still some daylight, but by the time David introduced the audience to the new album, it was all dark. The show was very good indeed and the band played very well. David was a kind of disappointment: he played quite badly during the whole show. If you are familiar with some guitar technique, you will find out why, by listening to the show. He played lots of wrong notes. During Shine On Crazy Diamond that was evident. But the worse had yet to come: his steel guitar was completely out of tune during his final solo on High Hopes, which was really awful, although maybe of some more interest for those who owns every single date of the tour. At one point he switched to the acoustic guitar to end the track. Another good moment was during 'Shine On', where he and Rick started playing the song in an acoustic way, while all other members of the band were having a glass of Chianti wine in a table nearby. At one point they started to touch the top of the wine glasses around, creating a background sound similar to Rick's keyboards.

The setlist was excellent, with the evident peak in Echoes, but with some other excellent moments: Fat Old Sun and Astronomy Domine (the latter being premiered in this summer segment of the tour). Many nice selections from The Division Bell.

ow, the recording. I was sitting on the left side of the stage, in a quite good position for taping. Unfortunately the audience (at least the one close to me) was not very keen on paying enough attention to the show. Some of them kept discussing during the first part of the show if Gilmour's show was better or worse than Water's one that they had seen a few weeks previously in Lucca.

Another one received something like 20 phone calls on his mobile phone, talking bullshit with all his relatives and finally stating, during 'Shine On', that "the Pink Floyd are playing Dark Side of the Moon" (?!). Fortunately, the chit-chat ended somehow magically before Red Sky at Night. But overall, this recording is in line with the usual LDB Master sound quality, so I think you won't be disappointed by this one.
