What
are the good days and the bad days?
It is quite normal to have good and bad days, and
to remember the good days are to remind you that you can feel normal.
If you do too much on a good day; it may be followed by one or two 'bad
days', so learn to pace yourself. If you wake up one morning, and you
feel that you could cope with anything, just do a little more than the
previous day.
What shouldn't I do after the operation, while my
Sternum is healing?
It takes approximately 8-12 weeks for the sternum to heal, you should
not do any digging the garden, mowing the lawn, heavy lifting, shifting
snow, cleaning windows and baths, pushing supermarket trolleys or driving.
When should it be OK to start swimming or cycling?
You should be able to start cycling or gentle swimming, six weeks after
your operation.
Am I excempt from wearing a seat-belt as a passenger in a car?
No. You do not qualify either as a driver or passenger for seat belt exemption,
so seat belts must be worn at all times. If this is uncomfortable, put
a cushion between your chest and the seat belt to soften any impacts.
What about sex?
You may resume sexual activity, when you feel fit enough, although don't
be too energetic at first! Ensure that you are the passive partner to
begin with.
